Canzine '09!

Howdy! I was at Canzine over the weekend, a Canadian festival celebrating indie zines, comics and small press. At my table were my graphic novel "After June" and prints of the Food Girls including the 2 new ones (Candy Apple + Lollipop).

It was great fun meeting new friends and reconnecting with old ones. Always a nice treat to be immersed among talented artists!

The event took place on November 1 '09 at the swanky Gladstone Hotel on 1214 Queen St. West, Toronto. Thanks to everyone who came!

Fashion Girls

Sketching is fun! I'd like to turn some of these into finals for a series. I've been wanting to explore some of my favourite subjects like fashion, dance and movement and can't wait to combine them all!

These are some sketches depicting those very things. Oh how I adore lines, shading and simple textures. The last one is inspired by memories of going out partying with girl friends and having a silly ol' time. I think some of them look a bit drunk, haha.

Wow, yet another Food Girl? I must be mad! Mad with anticipation for an upcoming circus-themed show with my collective Not An Octagon, that is! I've been hard at work making two new Food Girls. Here's a preview of the newest one. She's the first blonde in the series!

This will be the only sneak-peek until the show. You were all such smart cats and figured out what the last Food Girl was (candy apple, duh!) from my not-so-discreet-after-all preview shots. Such sleuths!

Waffle Girl: Progress 4

My internet cut out today thanks to reckless construction workers in the neighbourhood (who had the audacity to knock on my door and give me their business card!). So what's a girl to do sans world wide web? Brush up on Waffle Girl, of course!

The syrup is saucier, the waffle toastier and voila, there's even a plate in place! I'm approaching the end, yay!

More work on Waffle Girl :) I got rid of some syrup as it got a little too sticky. Not so sure on the waffle texture just yet...

Gonna work on the background next. I'm thinking of placing the waffle on a plate so it relates more to the environment. Anyhow, I'm happy to be painting / vectoring away!

Fan Expo 2009!!

Howdy! After much waiting and anticipation, I got the word today that I will be back at the Toronto Fan Expo this year! These are pics from last year.

As there's less than a month to prepare, needless to say I'm gonna be bee-say! I will post pics of new merch and progress as it comes. Stay tuned!

Yay! More progress on Waffle Girl today, I'm happy. Also finding myself craving a whopping Belgian waffle complete with toppings for some reason... ;)

There may be too much syrup for now, but I'll see how the rest fits. She'll most likely get cleaned up a bit. More to come!

Happy Friday! A few copies of my short graphic novel "After June" is available at The Beguiling, a delectable comic book shop in downtown Toronto. Each copy is available for $7 Cdn. There's a section near the entrance dedicated to indie zines and that's where you'll find me!

"After June" tells the beginnings of an impossible crush I had two summers ago. It was exhilarating, obsessive, frustrating and hilarious. When I think back on it, I STILL can't believe some of the things that happened! Oh the woes of infatuation...

These are pics from The Good Show, a fun art show by my collective Not An Octagon. We displayed our art goods at Balsam, a lovely restaurant in the Beaches neighourhood of Toronto. The night was full of relaxed and cool-for-mingling atmosphere with tasty treats and music!

I was devastated to hear the death of Michael Jackson last Thursday. He was my childhood idol and a big part of who I am today. The news of his passing prompted me to dig up these old drawings from my fanatic craze days, as well as going on a strict diet of MJ music and video marathon. Brings me right back!

Lost in the Moment: One

"Lost in the Moment: One" is finished now! I took much too long on it but it was a good exercise to develop this potential new series. More finessing was applied to the girl as well as the backdrop. I initially had a frenzy of swirls and textures going on in the background but decided to rule it out, as the simplicity is what makes it special.

So now, here she is! :)

Emotions Girl: Process 4

Emotions girl (real name pending) process no. 4! She's now looking more polished as I added more detailed rendering. It's great to be painting again :)

For the previous process pic (no. 3), I extended her body but I think ultimately the crop works better at the thigh. Next step is more treatment to the typographic element, background graphics and presto!

I'm aiming to have it finished within next week.

Emotions Girl: Process 3

Yay, I got more progress on the Emotions Girl today! Felt so good to spend a few solid hours on painting her. She now has more legs! But I may have yet something special to add to them, hehe...

I decided the last typographic treatment was just not matching her tone and the overall mood, also it wasn't very legible. Someone said it was felt like "Nightmare Before Christmas" and that's when I knew it needed a makeover! So, I customized a classically pretty font (Georgia) to make it work instead. The background isn't finalized yet but is heading in the direction I want.

I still got leaps and bounds to go to bring her to the level I want, but it's been really fun so far!

Hello! Just wanted to tell you about the latest Web Designer magazine, issue 157 (that's the cover up top) :)

This month, I cover how to create web headers inspired by newspaper styles like a financial newspaper, retro broadsheet and trashy tabloids. As always, it was fun coming up with the tutorials and this time, I got to "invent" my own news, which made it extra fun! Perhaps I can moonlight as a news reporter / journalist documenting fictitious news?

What a fun time! I drew silly doodles on a projector for very energetic kids on behalf of Owlkids magazine, met really cool artists / illustrators, and picked up some zines and goodies.

Sorry for the lack of pictures as I didn't have my camera! There were many things I wanted to take pics of, from the many booths to the funny doodles of humanized tomatoes with sunglasses I drew. Oh boy, the kids got demanding! "Add hair! Add sunglasses! Give him a face!!" Hehe it was all good because I just really wanted them to like my drawings and laugh and they did. :) At the end, the drawings were raffled in a draw. I was extra honoured that some kids picked mine and even asked for my autograph. How super cute!

It was also great to see my school friends and catch up, as well as reconnecting with my Owl team. But what surprised me the most was when strangers saw me and remembered me from last year's Fan Expo and told me they loved my work - aww! One girl even asked if I've been on TV, hehe. This definitely makes me want to do cons again this year.

The day ended nicely as I met the very talented Tara McPherson and picked up a copy of Skim by Jillian Tamaki. I've been meaning to get it for some time so I'm so glad I finally did!

Emotions Girl: Progress 2

A progress screenshot of my emotions girl! She is now adorned with her emotive phrase (I tried making it artfully legible. I hope it is!) The typographic element is in its bare form right now; textural / colour / pattern treatment to be applied next, as well as more painting of the girl.

Behold my first illoz for Weekly Project! I missed the actual deadline so created this for the consequence deadline. The brief was "take a picture of yourself smiling really hard with a sign that screams "I'm Happy!"

I would be a lot happier if I had actually gone to the dentist...(the image reminded me that I need to go soon!)

Hola world! This is the latest tutorial created for Web Designer magazine (from UK) on designing a sketchy / doodly template. I pulled out my box of trusty pencil crayons (childhood faves) and pens and went to town. Fluttering shapes, fun colours and striped lines where the way to go! Oh how I miss the days of doodling and sketching away with no worry of the rest of the world...

Graphic Novel Snippets

These are snippets of the graphic novel I illustrated for Rubicon Publishing. The story is about friendship and peer pressure between three best friends. The main character has to decide if she wants to switch to a gifted school and give up her current best friends, while one of the girls can't seem to stay out of trouble. Oh drama! Even teen girls aren't exempt, are they?

I can relate to this story as I've experienced similar situations as a school girl, plus going back down memory lane always feels special. I brought my own experiences and memories into the illustrations as much as I could muster.

It will be available as an educational tool for teachers and educators in August 2009.

This is a fashion e-commerce web layout for UK magazine Web Designer. It was created as a tutorial on web template design using Photoshop and Illustrator. One of my favourite things working on this was coming up with cute girly names for the dresses. My faves are Helena Urbanite and Fun Francine! (I'm such a girly girl, aren't I?!)

Wendy Ding Pin-Ups

Illustrator Wendy Ding tempted me with a cocktail of pin-up art at her booth where she was showcasing a series of four Pin-Up prints. The Pin-Up of the 1950's has enjoyed a remarkable comeback recently and Wendy has come up with a fantastic take on the genre, replacing the traditional giant champagne glass with types of food including a hot dog, ice cream cone, and my favorite, sushi held between two chopsticks. At her booth she has the glamour girls presented as bookmarks, magnets, and mini cut-outs.
